Typically a blue aluminosilicate mineral, Kyanite came from the Greek term “kyanos” that means “dark blue”. It is characterized by columnar and fribrous crystal habit, which makes it an attractive semi-precious gemstone because of its cat’s eye optical reflectance effect. Depending on the angle the stone is viewed from, Kyanite may appear in different shades other than blue. However, the most popular tinge of the stone is transparent with deep sapphire blue patches. In the jewellery-making industry, Kyanite is considered to be a rare and exotic stone which most people have probably not heard of. Because of its bladed crystal property, the stone has two hardness levels--4.5 on the Mohs scale if cut parallel to its length, and 6.5 to 7 if cut across the width of the blade--which requires professional stone cutting skills for it to be made into beautiful pieces of cabochons and beads.
My Gem Garden’s Kyanite cabochons collection features highly-polished cabochons in shades of blue, green, with dark blue hues appearing almost dark grey. Most of the shapes of our Kyanite cabochons are simple geometrical shapes of round, oval and rectangle, with the fancy ones including dainty teardrop and flower shapes.
